Description

- 75cm. high, 99cm. wide, 51cm. deep; 2ft. 5in., 3ft. 3in., 1ft. 8in.
boxwood and ebony strung, the secretaire drawer enclosing a baise lined writing surface and small drawers with turned ivory handles and pigeonholes the lower section enclosing two rows of three graduated drawers, one small drawer with a paper label printed with an Earl's coronet surmounting the letter 'R.'

Condition
This commode is of superb quality and employs finely figured veneers in its construction it is though very distressed and has much wear and losses throughout. The top has been re-polished. Scratches and chips throughout. The small toupe feet detached and only one front and rear remain. Fracture points to these sites. The lock is replaced. Replaced baise. After restoration this piece will be much improved. The top drawer does not close properly.

Gillows used similar, distinctive 'square handles' on their case furniture. See Susan Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, Woodbridge, 2008, vol. II, p. 335, fig. e. These handles, the high quality timbers employed and the distinctive crossbanded roundels on each door all support a Gillows attribution.
