Comprising: a necklace composed of large plaques engraved with Native American designs of an eagle, turtle and bear, with wooden and resin beads to the chain, length approximately 560mm; a necklace similarly designed and engraved with an eagle, length approximately 520m; and a haircomb engraved with a wild dog, each signed Bruce Caesar.

Provenance

A gift from Preston Duncan, elder of the Meskwaki Nation, Tama County, Iowa, USA to Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire (1920-2014) when he visited Chatsworth.

Literature

The Duchess often wore components from this parure. She is photographed with the Prince of Wales in 2000 wearing the necklace from this parure, this image is reproduced, Deborah Devonshire, Wait for Me, London, 2010, section 4, illustration no. 11. She was also filmed wearing part of this parure at The Frick Collection, New York for a talk given with Charlotte Mosley on 10th November 2010.

Condition

The pieces are made from 'German Silver' a nonferrous alloy of nickel, copper and zinc. Each signed Bruce Caesar. Scratches and dents to metal consistent with wear. Secure clasps.
