Provenance

A gift from Prince Ali Salman Aga Khan (1911–1960) to Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire (1920-2014)

The Duchess had become great friends with the Prince through their shared love of racing and horses. She writes about a memorable visit in 1955 to the Carnival in Rio, Brazil, as his guest. '...he was the easiest of company. His wife Rita Hayworth, was one of the four most beautiful women I have ever met', Deborah Devonshire, Wait for Me, London, 2010, p. 165.

The Duchess also spent time at the Prince's house in Neuilly outside Paris. She writes 'We went to marvellous nightclubs and restaurants, including Maxim's, and turned night into day, sometimes with friends of his and sometimes on our own. Aly took for granted the glamour of this round of pleasure...' (op. cit. p. 167).
