with turned spindles and a pair of 'gates', the trestle feet with scrolled brackets united by a shaped plinth, one turned bar lacking

Condition
Lovely quality. Despite loss of bar. Old marks and scratches consistent with age and use. Ring mark to plinth base. Hinges probably replaced.

For another clothes or towel 'horse' see that illustrated, Edwards & Macquoid, The Dictionary of English Furniture, 1954, vol. III, p. 268, fig. 11. This example appears to be by the same hand, although slightly different in formĀ from the offered lot, it shares similarities. It was also part of the Devonshire Collection and listed at the time of publication as being at Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire.
