Condition

Unexamined out of frame. The sheet appears sound. There is a pin hole apparent in the upper left vertical edge. There is some minor surface dirt and traces of staining in the bottom left and right quadrants in the grey pigment. This excepting the work appears in good overall condition, with strong, vivid colours throughout. Housed behind glass in an ornate gilt frame.

Catalogue Note

This portrait was painted at Edensor House on the Chatsworth Estate, Derbyshire, where Andrew and Deborah lived before moving into Chatsworth in 1959.

In her lifetime the Duchess had the following titles, The Honourable Deborah Vivien Freeman-Mitford (1920–1941), Lady Andrew Cavendish (1941–1944), the Marchioness of Hartington (1944–1950), Her Grace The Duchess of Devonshire (1950–1999), Her Grace The Duchess of Devonshire, DCVO (1999-2004) and finally Her Grace The Dowager Duchess of Devonshire, DCVO (2004-2014).
