Description
- alabaster, brass
- approximately: 42cm. high; 1ft. 4½in.
carved to copy cut-glass with borders of diamond point and line decoration and with four patinated cast-brass eagle head and mask hooks, originally hung with four chains now lacking

Acquired by William Spencer Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire (1790-1858)
Literature
Probably that recorded in the Breakfast Room; Chatsworth Inventory 25th October 1819 and the following days; 'An alabaster lamp with a bronze chain.'
Condition
This extraordinary ceiling light has restored damage. Filled and glued cracks/ Chips to detais and the finial is worn. There are stains and old marks and scratches. There are no supporting chains.

This ceiling light was painted by William Hunt hanging in the Lower Library at Chatsworth in 1822.

This light relates to marked examples in glass by William Collins. Particularly those that feature cast gilt-brass mask hooks for chains. Collins' workshop was based at 227 The Strand, London between 1808-1852. He had an illustrious group of clients in particular the Duke of Northumberland for whom he produced a large body of work.
