Description

  • Pine and textiles
  • 195cm. wide; 6ft. 6in.
with a printed cotton Robert Kime 'Opium Poppy' loose cover, with square tapering pine front legs on brass castors

Provenance

Acquired by Deborah, Duchess of Devonshire (1920-2014) for her Office from Robert Kime, before moving to the Old Vicarage, Edensor. The fabric must have been popular with the Duchess, as a larger sofa and armchair in the same printed cotton were also acquired for the Blue Drawing Room at Chatsworth.

Literature

The Duchess of Devonshire, Chatsworth, The House, London, 2002, p. 9, illustrated in The Duchess's Office.

Condition

Well made. The printed cotton loose cover with old marks and stains, holes from wear, notably to the arms. Box pleated trim tired and with holes. Fracture and break to baton of the underside which will require repair. Very comfortable despite being tired and in need of re-covering.
