Catalogue Note

Belonging to a niche group of Eastern Europen artists, Romolu Nuțiu’s practice was devoted entirely to transforming his surrounding reality into lyrical and abstract depictions. Consistent with his Western contemporaries, Nuțiu was actively engaged with the development of Tachisme and Abstract Expressionism. As one of the first and most committed representative of the newest artistic achievements, Nuțiu created playful compositions based on explosive interpretations of natural and organic forms. His daring sense of colour and free use of form ran in direct contrast to the realist and homogenised aesthetic ideology of Nicolae Ceausescu‘s (artistically) oppressive regime. Nuțiu protested against the moral hazard of the dictatorship, using only the most fundamental 'tools' of a painter; colour and form. Romul Nutiu's works could be found in the collections of National Museum of Contemporary Art, Bucharest, Brukenthal National Museum and several prominent private collections in Germany, France, Italy, USA and Canada.
