Catalogue Note
Brătescu's Pre-Medean forms created in 1977 represent some of her earliest images on the theme of the mythical Medea, to which she returned many times throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Describing Medea she says, 'She is a very complex character: she is a woman, a mother, a wife, she loves enormously and hates enormously'. These works led to two Medean series of textiles created in 1980-81 one of which is today owned by Tate Modern, and the other by MoMA.
