The Moderna Museet in Stockholm is indisputably one of the world’s greatest museums of Modern Art. Since opening in 1958, the museum has continuously deepened and broadened its collections and organized an extraordinary range of exhibitions, thereby building the foundations for an institution that has few parallels in Europe today.

Through a tradition of exceptional exhibitions grounded by a succession of prominent directors, the museum shares a strong relationship with American Art. Since the 1960s, the Moderna Museet has been a key institution for the creative dialogue between artists in Europe and in the United States, introducing such American artists as Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Claes Oldenburg to the European audience. It is the museum’s aspiration to continue this transatlantic conversation and to widen the international outlook.

A natural result of this transatlantic exchange was the founding of The American Friends of the Moderna Museet, Inc. (AFMM) as a U.S. §501(c)(3) public charity, for the purposes of supporting and promoting activities of the Moderna Museet and encouraging the appreciation and enjoyment of Modern Art in general.

With the help of the AFMM, the museum has been able to acquire works by some of today’s leading American artists. The museum hopes to intensify this endeavor and wants to broaden the perspective to include works by key artists from across the globe.

By organizing this benefit auction in collaboration with Sotheby’s, the AFMM will help raise much needed funds for future acquisitions for the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, and thereby ensure that the museum will continue to be a leader in its field.
