Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. The canvas is unlined. The areas of heavy impasto are well intact. There is evidence of light wear along the turning edges and corners and light dust within the recesses of the fibrous pigment. There are scattered minor surface accretions at the top left edge. The fibrous accretions and sand are inherent to the artist's working method. Under Ultraviolet light inspection, there is no evidence of restoration. Unfamed.

Catalogue Note

"This small jewel-like painting by Richard Pousette-Dart was begun circa 1948 and worked on until 1978. Layering oil paint, sand and other materials, Richard liked to work over and over, through and through, working up the surface until the painting became a 'thing of its own' as he said, translucent and mysterious." - Evelyn Pousette-Dart, in a letter to the current owner, September 25, 1995
