Catalogue Note

The collection of Baron and Baronness Guy and Myriam Ullens de Schooten is one of the largest and most significant holdings of contemporary Chinese art in the world. First stepping foot in China in 1987, the couple developed an unparalleled collection over the next twenty years that includes works by several generations of Chinese artists. While in China, Guy and Myriam Ullens de Schooten often spent time with artists during the weekends. Art collecting had yet to become a trend at the time, and Guy and Myriam Ullens de Schooten took the opportunity to amass an extraordinary collection that included early works by now internationally renowned artists. The collection thus provides enormous insight into the shifting cultural, social and philosophical perspectives of Chinese contemporary artists. In 2007 the couple established the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing's 798 Art Zone as one of the first museum-scale non-profit art centers in China, continuing their generous support for both established and emerging Chinese artists. In the present sale, all lots from the collection of Guy and Myriam Ullens de Schooten are being sold to benefit the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, with net sale proceeds being planned to support the Center's 2016 exhibitions and public programs.

The present sale showcases 34 lots from the distinguished collection, including historically important works by early contemporary Chinese artists such as Gu Dexin, Wei Guangqing and Zhang Jianjun. Leading the contemporary photography section are Wang Qingsong, Han Lei, Rong Rong and He An; while exciting emerging artists include Xue Feng, Guo Hongwei, Bird Head, Jiang Pengyi and Chen Wei, etc. Last but not least, anchoring the sale are illustrious works by Zhang Xiaogang, Yang Shaobin and Yin Xiuzhen, amongst many others.
