Yoshihara Jiro Collection
Following Sotheby's Hong Kong's "Full Circle — Yoshihara Jiro Collection" in October 2015, the first dedicated Yoshihara Jiro collection to appear on the market, we are honoured to present "Full Circle II" (Lot 769 to Lot 793) – a second assemblage of paper, canvas and ceramic works by the renowned Gutai leader.
The selection includes works dating back to Yoshihara's pre-Gutai years, featuring a rare collection of works on paper that reveal raw traces of the charismatic master's early artistic explorations. Such exquisite pieces shed light on the charismatic master's early artistic explorations in brushwork and medium as well as the development of his seminal 'circle' motif.
Yoshihara founded and led the Gutai Art Association in the town of Ashiya, near Osaka, in 1954. Born from the shadows of Japan's WWII regime, Gutai called for daring revolutionary change that empowered individualism, freedom of expression and experimentation. Literally uniting 'instrument' (gu) with 'body' (tai), Gutai advocated a reinvigorating philosophy of 'concreteness' that emphasized the relationship between the human spirit and material. Blurring the lines between art and experience, Gutai created art that emitted the piercing "scream of matter" as penned by Yoshihara in the 1956 Gutai Art Manifesto.
As the leader of Gutai, Yoshihara urged his fellow artists to "never imitate others" and create something that had never existed before. His own oeuvre is defined by the ubiquitous circle: a motif that Yoshihara focused on almost exclusively in the last decade of his life. His celebrated circles are reminiscent of traditional enso (circle) paintings, which symbolize enlightenment, freedom, unity and infinity. While the enso was executed in one single fluid stroke, Yoshihara reconstructed the circle with meticulous layering techniques whilst retaining the nobility of the calligraphic gesture, transcending the dichotomies of East and West and fusing the subtle essences of traditional Japanese beauty into a revolutionary new aesthetic of international contemporaneity.
