Catalogue Note
Born in 1969 in Busan, Jeon Joonho conducts a multimedia practice with works including computer animations, paintings, sculptures and installations. He satirizes popular icons, such as McDonald’s, the Statue of Liberty and the American dollar bill, in order to comment on capitalism and dominating power structures. Amongst his most signature works, the digital animation The White House (2005-2006) features a handyman walking into the American twenty-dollar bill, painting over the windows and doors of the White House so as to render it window-less and door-less. The work posits the White House as being shut and isolated, constituting a metaphor for US imperialism and the administration’s opacity.
Jeon earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Dong-eui University, Korea, and studied abroad for his Master of Arts in Chelsea College of Art and Design, London. Over the years Jeon has participated in many esteemed biennials including the Venice Biennale (2015), the Singapore Biennale (2006), and Gwangju Biennale (2004). His work has been shown at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, L’espace Louis Vuitton and the Mori Art Museum, amongst others, and his work is collected by important institutions and museums worldwide.
