Catalogue Note

Born in 1961, Choi Jeong-Hwa is an artist, designer and art director known for his acclaimed large-scale mixed media sculptures and installations. Sourcing from the most humble and insignificant materials, such as soda bottles, shopping bags, and plastic plates, Choi investigates the intrinsic value and inner dialectic of materials hidden beneath the surface. Choi's works draw analogies with Pop Art, exhibiting a strong sense of design and color. He also challenges the hierarchic system of museums by assembling his art on the outside of the buildings, claiming inspiration from the harmony and chaos of the urban environment.

Choi graduated from the College of Fine Arts of Hong-Ik University, Seoul, in 1987. Having participated in numerous exhibitions worldwide, most notably the Liverpool Biennial in 2004, the Venice Biennial in 2005, the Singapore Biennial in 2006, as well as the 17th Biennial of Sydney, Australia in 2010, etc., Choi has become one of the most dynamic artists in the contemporary art world today. Most notably, in 2008 he decorated the Seoul Olympic Stadium with glittering garlands made out of 2 million pieces of plastic products including milk containers, water bottles and crates.
