Condition

Colour: The colours in the catalogue illustration are fairly accurate, although the overall tonality is more subtle and slightly deeper in the original. Condition: This work is in very good condition. There is evidence of wear to the corner tips. Close inspection reveals small hairline cracks in places, some of which resulted in associated small specks of loss notably one to the extreme left edge approximately 20cm from the upper left corner. Examination under ultraviolet light reveals dark fluorescence to the centre of each vertical edge and a few further isolated spots towards the lower half of the composition which appear to be due to minor inpainting.

Catalogue Note

“On Herod's birthday, the daughter of Herodias danced before them: and pleased Herod. Whereupon he promised with an oath, to give her whatsoever she would ask of him. But she being instructed before by her mother, said: Give me here in a dish the head of John the Baptist. And the king was struck sad: yet because of his oath, and for them that sat with him at table, he commanded it to be given. And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison. And his head was brought in a dish: and it was given to the damsel, and she brought it to her mother .“
