Catalogue Note

"Right from the start of his career he gave the artistic mainstream a wide berth, breaking with the cultural conventions of his age by contravening the rules of the art business, even at the risk of being ignored. Instead of working in the shelter of a gallery, Haring seized the opportunities offered him by public spaces...With his kind of art, Keith Haring quickly became the youthful hero of a whole generation, symbolizing and personifying for many the America of the 1980s. His pictures and signs became the messages of this generation, fixtures of the culture that they symbolized."
