Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. The edges of the sheet are deckled and there is a slight undulation to the sheet, inherent to the artist’s working method. There are artist’s pinholes in the bottom 2 corners. The collaged elements are all intact. Under close inspection, there is some very pale staining in the unpainted area and a there is a faint crease visible in the upper left of white unpainted area, possibly from the time of execution. Also under close inspection, some faint discoloration is visible to the upper left edge. Sheet hinged verso to matte intermittently along top edge. Framed under glass.

Catalogue Note

"Johns' treatment of these images, using the face as a frame or background to a central image, accomplishes his intention to find 'an expression that combines something infantile and something adult.' Certainly the sense of memory, of pieced-together fragments from a remembered past, is very strong in these works."

Michael Crichton, Jasper Johns, New York 1994, p. 74
