Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. There is evidence of light wear and handling along the edges including a pinpoint spot of loss to the green paint at the upper left corner revealing a layer of red underneath and two spots of loss along the lower right edge. The colors are bright, fresh and clean. The areas of impasto all appear to be stable. Under very close inspection, fine and unobtrusive hairline craquelure is visible throughout. Under Ultraviolet light inspection, there is no evidence of restoration. There are two patches on the verso of the canvas, one in the lower right and one in the center left that appear to be possibly from the time of execution and do not relate to any areas of restoration or structural damage on the front of the canvas. Framed.

Catalogue Note

"If you have seen...many of Hofmann's paintings, you will have seen certain attributes persisting: bright color, painterly surface, impulsive...You will also have seen many puzzling things: the stylistic variety, abutting complimentary colors which never become garish or 'optical,' surfaces jam-packed with agitated pigment which somehow turn serene, icy greens exuding warmth."

Walter Darby Bannard in Exh. Cat., Houston, The Museum of Fine Arts, Hans Hofmann: A Retrospective Exhibition, 1976, p. 22
