Catalogue Note

The crest and coronet are those of Amherst for Field Marshall, the Right Hon. Sir Jeffrey Amherst, K.B., P.C., born 1717, Commander in Chief of the British Army in North America from 1758-64, Governor of Virginia 1759-68 and of Guernsey 1770-79. He was created in 1776 Baron Amherst of Holmesdale, co. Kent, and in 1788 Baron Amherst of Montreal. He died without issue in 1797.
