Catalogue Note
The grid mark on the base of this box is not clear but looks to be that of Max Snischek (1891-1968). He is best known for directing the fashion department of the Wiener Werkstätte from 1922, but in addition to textiles he designed enamel, jewelry, wallpaper, and commercial graphics.
Three boxes given to Snischek, with enamel tops and bodies in silver-plate or wood, were sold Bonham's, London, June 16, 2010, lots 212-214. A silver and enamel brooch by Snischek with a "fashionable lady" was sold Skinners, Boston, June 17, 2008, lot 40. The enamel panel on the offered box should also be compared with that on a silver box by Josef Hoffman, illustrated Waltraud Neuwirth, Wiener Werkstätte, Registered Trademarks, fig. 239-241.
