Provenance

The MM monogram on these coasters is probably for Grand Duke Michael Mikhailovich (1861-1929), grandson of Tsar Nicholas I.  Known to his family as "Miche-miche", from 1885 to 1891 he was building a palace in St. Petersburg on the Admiralty embankment.  However, after a morganatic marriage in 1891, he and his wife were exiled from Russia.
