Catalogue Note
With Gothic spires on the legs and meticulously carved arches to the frieze, this desk is a beautifully executed example of the Gothic Revival of the 19th century. The design of the legs is very similar to a design by Thomas Chippendale from plate XXXIX in his first edition of the Director, published in 1754, as well as in subsequent editions. An 18th-century George III side table with comparable legs formerly with French and Company, New York was sold Christie's New York, November 24, 1998, lot 65, and a further related example is in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, illustrated in Anthony Coleridge, Chippendale Furniture, London: 1968, fig.217.
