Condition

Overall in good condition; bold form and decoration. Large size. Restorations have been well done with occasional bits of carving (mainly to the ends of the acanthus leaves) recarved and regilt after chips. Some rubbing and wear to ebonized decoration with cracklure and some minor age cracks. A six inch patch to the inside of one leg. Lines of construction, where the wood has been laminated, are visible. Gilding with some rubbing and minor losses exposing red bole beneath. Sturdy and ready to place.

These jardinières are copies of a model probably made by William Trotter of Edinburgh, circa 1815, for the Marquess of Tweeddale at Yester House as noted in F. Bamford, A Dictionary of Edinburgh Wrights and Furniture Makers 1660-1840, 1983, pl. 73. Similar pairs were sold Sotheby's New York, October 11, 1996, lot 291, Sotheby's New York, October 21-22, 2004, lot 269, and Sotheby's New York, April 4-5, 2007, lot 100.
