Catalogue Note
This bust is based on a full figure statue of Antinous in the guise of the god Dionysos from the 2nd century CE, which is now in the Vatican Museum. Antinous was the favorite of Emperor Hadrian (117-138 CE). After Antinous's death, Hadrian deified him and commissioned art depicting him as various gods. In this sculpture, Antinous has a crown of ivy berries and leaves and a diadem with a pinecone. Originally, the diadem most likely held a cobra and a lotus flower, but the pinecone was added to the original sculpture by earlier restorers.
