Description

  • tempera on canvas, giltwood
  • height with frame 36 1/4 in.; width with frame 43 1/2 in.
  • 92 cm; 110.5 cm
tempera on canvas, in giltwood frames

Condition

Unlined. The paint surface on both canvases is for the most part well intact. Scattered small losses at the extreme edges of both paintings. The painting with figures descending the stairs: several patches on the reverse of the canvas to address some small damages, the largest addresses an old compound tear in the upper left quadrant in the wooden staircase above the marble columns. UV light reveals retouches that are already visible to the naked eye. The painting with the obelisk: some visible old fills in the sky; UV light reveals retouching scattered throughout, but to a greater degree in the column, stone architecture, and urns at the right edge.
