Catalogue Note

The present pair are modeled after Antonio Canova's sculptures of Creugas of Durres and Damoxenos of Syracuse who met during the Nemean games. According to the legend, the two pugilists were so evenly matched that the match lasted for hours until they ended it by each allowing the other one unblocked blow. Damoxenos killed Creugas with his blow; therefore, Creugas was declared the winner posthumously.
