Condition
Overall in very good condition and presentation. The patina is fairly even overall, there are a few very light surface scratches and areas of discoloration consistent with age and atmospheric conditions. The bases both have several small chips at the edges, and show other signs of wear and discoloration consistent with age and use. The bases and the sculptures are contemporaneous/likely original to each other.

Catalogue Note
The prolific firm of Val d'Osne, established by J.P.V. André in 1835, was known for their extensive inventory of architectural designs and 'fancy castings'. Reputed sculptors like Carrier-Belleuse, Mathurin Moreau (who became a shareholder and administrator of the company), Pradier and Delaplanche created numerous models exclusively for Victor André. The firm's monumental bronze fountain cast with swans and Classical figures was much applauded at the 1851 London Exhibition, and they won several prizes at subsequent International Exhibitions. Acquired by Barbezat & Cie in 1867, and allying with the fondeur J.J. Ducel towards 1870, the company was eventually renamed Société Anonyme des Hauts-Fourneaux & Fonderies du Val-D'Osne, Anciennes maison J.P.V. André et J.J. Ducel et Fils. The most celebrated work or art cast by the firm would be irrefutably the Parisian subway entrances designed by Hector Guimard.
