Catalogue Note

The design of the present lot derives from a pair of armchairs in the library of the Empress at Pavlovsk Palace, illustrated, A. Kuchumov, Pavlovsk Palace & Park, Leningrad, 1975, pl. 58.  They were most probably made by the St. Petersburg workshop of Heinrich Gambs.  Other examples of this model are at the summer palace at Tsarskoe Selo, and in the Catherine Wing at Monplaisir Palace, Petrodvorets (see Antoine Chenevière, Russian Furniture, The Golden Age 1780-1840, New York, 1988, p. 121, no. 104).
