Catalogue Note

This pair of large lions is based on one of the most celebrated sculptures by Antonio Canova: the lions at the tomb of Pope Clement XIII in St Peter's, Rome. Canova flanked the Pope's tomb with one sleeping and one vigilant lion made from travertine. In 1823, the 6th Duke of Devonshire commissioned Rinaldo Rinaldi and Francesco Benaglia to make copies of Canova's lions. That pair is still in the sculptural gallery at Chatsworth.
