Catalogue Note
HDMS Valkyrien formed part of the doomed Danish blockade to Copenhagen harbour at the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801. To continue the free trade agreements with revolutionary France, Russia formed the League of Armed Neutrality in 1800. Comprising Denmark, Sweden, Prussia and Russia the group's aim was to prevent Britain blocking French trade with the rest of Europe. The British viewed the League to be entirely advantageous to the French and were unwilling to allow the 'old enemy' to trade whilst technically at war with Britain. To prevent the League from becoming a significant force in the Baltic Admiral Hyde Parker and Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson had to intervene before the Baltic thawed and the Russian fleet joined the Scandinavians. Having set out from Yarmouth Nelson and Parker arrived at Copenhagen in early April 1801 and were met by a barrier of Danish warships. The Valkyrien was positioned as a ship-of-the-line to meet the British. Unfortunately the ill-equipped Danish ships could not manoeuvre with ease. Lord Nelson, who led the battle, disobeyed Admiral Parker and engaged the Danish fleet. His swift actions saw a decisive victory for the British, in which eleven of the twelve Danish frigates were captured or burnt. The Valkyrien was to be burnt by the British, as officers could not be spared to take them as prizes. Following Nelson's skill in battle and decision to engage he was given Parker's post as Admiral of the Fleet and would subsequently lead Britain to victories at the battle of the Nile and Trafalgar cementing Britain's naval supremacy.
