Description
- Prima Porta Augustus and the Vatican Antinous
- bronze, brown patina, on green marble and ebonised wood bases
- Italian, circa 1900 After the Antique
Condition
Overall, the bronzes are in a very good condition, with minor dirt and wear to the surfaces consistent with age. Both figures were cast in sections, and there are stable original joints, including a very slightly visible joint at Antinous' upper arms. There is a slightly open joint at Augustus' proper right arm, where a plug is also visible: it is possible that the arm has been reattached. There is some minor scratching in areas. The support behind Augustus' proper right leg is cast separately. Both staffs are slightly warped. There is minor rubbing to the high points of the patina of both casts, and to Antinous' chest. There are some minor nicks, including to Antinous' cloak at the bottom on the reverse.
The bases are in a very good condition, with some veining to the marble consistent with the material. There are some nicks and chips to the edges of the wood.
