Condition

The single panel is uncradled and flat. The paint surface is relatively clean and the varnish only slightly discoloured. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals spot retouching in the proper left-hand side of the sitter's face and around his chin, beneath the window sill, left, around the sitter's sleeve, lower left, and in the sky, upper left. There is a scattering of minor retouchings along the right margin, but the painting is otherwise untouched. In overall good condition.
