with a distressed needlework drop in seat
Condition
A fine example, with typical old marks and scratches, ingrained dirt and the sort of wear one would expect to see. There is rubbing to exposed edges/angles, notably on the legs. These chairs have a built up a layer of dark polish, which gives them an attractive patina. The trellised backs with age cracks. The left upright with a small hole. The front frieze rail with a dribbled stain mark. The rear legs with consolidated spliced repairs - this could be a secured age crack rather than a full break. The rear feet with small wedge shaped spliced repairs. The needlework seat appears to be 18th century but is in a poor state of repair. Traces of old worm to seat corner supporting blocks but stable.

Catalogue Note
The present chair relates to the ‘Chinese Chair’ designs of Robert Manwaring, illustrated in The Cabinet and Chair-Maker's Real Friend and Companion first published in 1765. The lattice back also bares similarity to the Chinese and Gothick designs of Thomas Chippendale, however, the restrained simplicity of the pattern would suggest that Manwaring is the more likely source of inspiration.
