Description

  • Large key
  • steel and brass, on a modern brass and perspex stand
  • German, 1614
dated: 1614

Condition

Overall the condition of the key is good, with some wear and minor dirt to the surface consistent with age. There is some minor oxidisation and darkening to the steel. There are several nicks to the brass and a few small lacunae, notably one to the bottom of the brass section. There is some white residue in the crevices, probably polish. The stand is in good condition with minor wear.

Catalogue Note

Even though the present key is considerably longer and more elaborately decorated, the heavy bow, cranked ferrule, and combination of meandering and circular piercings to the bit compare well to a group of early Baroque keys illustrated in Pankofer, Schlüssel und Schloß, Munich, 1974, p. 60.
