Catalogue Note

John Makepeace (b. 1939) is perhaps the most influential British designer-maker of the last quarter of the 20th century. Eschewing the post modern ideals of machine made furniture and brutal forms, Makepeace has made an extraordinary career focusing on hand crafted furniture using locally sourced timber. His organic designs coupled with an innovative and modern eye has gained him accolades and commissions from institutions such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge and the Birmingham City Art Gallery. Makepeace's strong belief in the craft of furniture have never translated into a mass market production line, the vast majority of his output is therefore commissions for private clients with a discerning eye for quality and an understanding of the history of cabinet making.
