Description

  • Thomas Whitcombe
  • A British frigate and an armed cutter, patrolling off the french coast, circa 1804
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Anonymous sale ('The Property of a Gentleman of Title'), London, Christie's South Kensington, 10 November 1994, lot 504, where acquired.

Condition

The canvas has a rather firm relining, the paint surface is clean and the varnish is clear and even - the painting does not require any further attention. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals spot retouching to the waves in the foreground, and more minimally in the sails, as well as to the sky, to reduce the appearance of craquelure. There are larger areas of retouching along the margin, upper centre, in the upper left corner, and on the right margin, lower centre - the largest of these measures approx. 10 by 1 cm. There is also an 'H'-shaped area of restoration to the right of the central mast, measuring approx. 8 cm. high.
