Description

  • silk, wool, some tinting, woven tapestry technique
  • approximately 257cm. high, 287cm. wide; 8ft. 5in., 9ft. 5in.
woven with a large pendant framed cartouche enclosing a pastoral scene of lady and cherub before a sculptural figure, set against a river landscape setting with exuberant flowering plants, and dog attacking ducks, with a floral swag supported from the top of the flanking fluted side columns

Condition

Overall measurements: 253cm high along left side, 257cm high across the right side, 283cm across upper edge, 287cm. across the lower edge. Faded colours overall. The light ground has dark staining in areas, especially up the right side. The light highlights within the motifs, such as the birds, and to figural group within the medallion have had repairs clearly visible. There is a split in the main ground near the bird, just lower right of the medallion. There are small repairs and reweaves overall. There is a section inset along the lower edge, or later weave, with tinting in places. The outer selvedges are partially original and blue and the other sections are later machine made selvedges. The tapestry is partially lined with alternating vertical strips across the back. It would benefit from lining across the tapestry and from Velcro being attached across the top edge for hanging purposes in the future.
