Catalogue Note

The inscription 'Comus' erroneously refers to the chestnut colt foaled in 1809 by Sorcerer out of Houghton Lass, who was owned by Sir John Shelley. John Frederick Herring Snr. painted Comus in 1831, recording the very unusual spotting on Comus’s golden chestnut coat (with Macconal-Mason, London).
