the curved back above two supports with scrolled decoration, on a reeded base with carved sabre legs terminating on brass cappings and castors
Condition
In overall reasonable conserved condition. The backs of both chairs have restored age cracks to the returns. The seat rails have been secured and have signs of some light restoration. The upholstery has a good colour but has typical signs of wear and could benefit from a clean according to taste. The supports to the curved back rest have movement along the lines of construction and the fabric has worn and is lacking its brocade at the joints. The legs and base have atmospheric old marks, scuffs and scratches commensurate with age and use.

Catalogue Note
This pair of chairs are of near identical form to a set of fourteen supplied by the firm of Gillingtons of Dublin to Euseby Cleaver, Archbishop of Dublin 1809 - 1820. The brothers George and Samuel Gillington are recorded at various addresses from 1815 to 1838. Their warehouses were mostly in Abbey street, Dublin which inevitably led to confusion with the other well-known Irish firm of Mack and Gibton who also traded from that address. Gillingtons became one of Irelands pre-eminent cabinet makers, many pieces to their design or bearing their stamp have appeared at auction and bear all the hallmarks of the highest quality design and execution. A related pair of Klismos chairs was sold in these rooms, 18 November 1994, lot 172.
