Catalogue Note
Maison Marnyhac was the trade name for La Société des Marbres et Bronzes Artistiques de Paris, established in the mid-nineteenth century under the auspices of Charles de Marnyhac at avenue de l'Opéra then later at rue de la Paix. Specialising in objets de luxe, the company exhibited an identical pair of candelabra on their award-winning stand at the 1878 Exposition Universelle together with the Grande Pendule, sujet Neptune, forming a three-piece clock garniture.François Linke also produced the garniture after purchasing the model at the first Denière sale in February 1903, and displayed it at the Exposition Universelle et Internationale de Liège in 1905. The clocks (index numbers 022 and 023) he retailed at 4,000 and 2,000 francs, depending on the size, with the candelabra (index numbers 027 and 028) more expensive at 4,500 and 3,000 francs.
A pair of the candelabra in gilt bronze and signed F. Linke were sold Sotheby's London, October 2nd 1998 lot 279, (£28,750). A surtout de table by Marnyhac, featuring the same figure of Neptune found on the clock, was sold Sotheby's New York, November 1st 2000, lot 246 ($84,125).
