Catalogue Note
Considered one of Severin's most celebrated works, the bureau de l'abbé Terray, the model on which this desk is based, was created around 1760 and has been in the collection of the Musée du Louvre (OA7805) since 1924. Interest in the model was revived in the nineteenth century, and it was recreated by many of the finest ébénistes of the period including Henri Dasson, Alfred Beurdeley, Paul Sormani, Gervaise Durand, and Antoine Krieger.
An example by Alfred Beurdeley sold Sotheby's New York, 22 April 2010, lot 128; another by Paul Sormani was sold Christie's London, 6th March 2014, lot 148. A fine "Grand Cabinet" inspired by Guillaume Benneman, also unsigned and incorporating the same E. Laurent Locks, was offered Sotheby's New York, 29th October 2014, lot 86.
