Catalogue Note
Léon Messagé collaborated closely, often as a freelance artist, with various different Parisian cabinetmakers such as Zwiener, Linke, and Roux at Brunet; it may be that Millet commissioned this design directly from Messagé, or that they created it after seeing another example of the model.
Maison Millet won the gold medal in the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle, a Grand Prix in 1900 and three further diplomes d'honneur and four médailles d'or for the furniture and works of art they produced. See Sotheby's New York, 26th October 2006, lot 166 for an example of a Millet vitrine stongly influenced by the designs of Messagé.
