Catalogue Note
Part of the 'Seasons' series, Winter was first woven by Jacob van der Borght the Elder’s (1676-1710) workshop in Brussels; designs by De Hondt after David Teniers were the inspiration. Jacob Van der Borght’s son Jasper van der Borght, and Jasper's sons, Peter (d. 1763) and Jan-Frans (d. 1774), completed later weavings of the series.
Comparable examples from the series can be found at Uppark in Sussex. Another tapestry made up of two separate scenes was sold at Christie’s London, March 27, 1986, lot 192. A third closely related tapestry was sold at Sotheby’s Monaco, June 23-24, 1926, lot 116.
