Catalogue Note

Friedrich Egermann (1777-1864) was a chemist in Bohemia whose experiments led to the creation of a glass, called Lithyalin, which resembled semiprecious stones. Similar experiments were happening in Sarreguemines with faience made to look like hardstones. The quest to create imitations of precious materials was represented across many materials and those products were featured throughout the Expositions Universelles. This pair is unique in their form and size. The pair of urns are one of the larger known examples of Lithyalin glass and their classical form, rather than a more ornate 19th century design, make them unique.
