Catalogue Note

Nicolai Abraham Abildgaard (1743-1809) was one of the most innovative designers of Danish Neoclassicism and can be credited with the creation of the Danish Neo-Antique style. Abildgaard aimed to be as authentic to ancient Greco-Roman furniture as possible and closely followed the archaeological advancements in Italy. The present chairs are after his 1794 designs for seat furniture inspired by Pompeian finds and commissioned for Christiansborg Palace, see Mirjam Gelfer-Jørgensen, The Dream of a Golden Age: Danish Neo-Classical Furniture 1790-1850, s.n., 2004, pp. 217-219.
