Condition
The matter is thin in some areas, where the canvas is distinguishable. Traces of compas and pencil are visible under the painting, which is characteristic of the painter's technique.
Under UV light, no repaint is visible.

Catalogue Note
Dans ce portrait, allégorie de la beauté féminine, Bernard Boutet de Monvel prend pour modèle Mrs Gilbert W. Kahn, née Sara Jane Heliker (1912-1988), ancienne danseuse à Broadway, qui lui avait commandé en 1938 un portrait la montrant de face au bord de la piscine de sa maison de Palm Beach (reproduit dans la monographie de Stéphane-Jacques Addade, Bernard Boutet de Monvel, Paris 2016, p. 334). Notre tableau fut réalisé la même année, certainement en vue de l’exposition sur le thème des profils, à laquelle le peintre réfléchissait dès les années 1930 et qui eut lieu en 1947 chez Knoedler, New York.
Mrs Gilbert Kahn (née Sara Jane Heliker), former Broadway dancer, commissions Boutet de Monvel for a portrait in 1938, showing her before her Palm Beach villa. The same year, the painter executes this composition, that he kept for himself, probably for the later Profiles exhibition in New York, which the artist had in mind.
