Condition

The painting sits on its original canvas. The matter is thin and pencil traces are visible under the painting. Very thin craquelures are visible in the upper right, in the background. Under UV light, no repaint is visible. The ground fluoresces slightly, but this is probably due to a pigment used by the painter. Very good condition.

Catalogue Note

This portrait represents Lady Plunket (née Aileen Guinness), in 1949. The painting was executed in New York, during the artist's last trip to the United States. A first version where Lady Plunket holds a smoking-kit, executed the same year, was delivered to her (see lot 245 for a preparatory sketch).
