The painting sits on its original canvas. A minor retouch is visible on the veil on the left. Under UV light, some areas fluoresce but this is due to a pigment used by the painter. No repaint is visible. Very good condition.

A l’automne 1922, Bernard Boutet de Monvel, qu’a transporté de joie la naissance de sa fille Sylvie, décida de la peindre dans son moïse, au côté sa mère à Nemours (lot 30) et seule, sur un fond d’un blanc légèrement rosé. Ce dernier tableau, que le peintre décida d’exposer en 1926 à la Anderson Galleries, New York, remporta un vif succès auprès du public américain, tant pour la modernité de son dépouillement géométrique que pour la légèreté de son traitement et son “hyperréalisme”.

Aussi Bernard Boutet de Monvel décida, vers 1936, alors qu’il commençait à envisager une exposition de ses profils les plus fameux (ce sera l’exposition à la Knoedler Galleries, New York en 1947) de reprendre Sylvie dans son berceau, mais en plaçant le visage du bébé de profil et non plus tourné vers le spectateur. Cette seconde version à laquelle le peintre vouait un attachement tout particulier et qu’il souhaita conserver précieusement, est celle que nous dévoilons ici. Une aquarelle de même sujet et un dessin préparatoire sont présentés aux lots 125 et 223.

This painting knows two versions : the first one was executed in 1923, the year following Sylvie's birth, where the child looks towards us. The second version that we are here presenting was executed circa 1936. The painter decided to paint the child in profile, giving the painting a more modern touch. A watercolor with the same subject and a preparatory sketch are presented lots 125 and 223.
