Condition

Unframed. The paper is slightly faded ; humidity spots are visible by the left border of the composition, along with dirt spots and minor scratches, barely visible, scattered on the surface. The paper mesures 95 x 73 cm ; the drawing with the figure's head and wings mesures 88 x 59 cm. The work is signed center right. The photograph in the catalogue is slightly cropped on the left of the composition. The visual is too pink and the yellow is actually more Naples yellow. Good overall condition.

Catalogue Note

La Société des Aquarellistes français naît en 1879 au sein de la galerie Durand-Ruel, rue Laffitte, Paris. Gustave Doré, Eugène Lami, Ferdinand Heilbuth et Jehan Georges Vibert figurent parmi les artistes membres les plus connus. En 1890, l'association s'agrandit pour accueillir de nouveaux membres : James Tissot, Lhermitte, Harpignies, Bonnat, Meissonier et Maurice Boutet de Monvel, pour ne citer qu'eux. Le projet que nous présentons ici annonce l'ouverture de la 19ème exposition, du 5 mai au 13 juin 1898. Une affiche est conservée au Musée Carnavalet, Paris. Un dessin préparatoire est inclus dans la vente (lot 188).

The Société des Aquarellistes français was created in 1879, at the Galerie Durand-Ruel in Paris. Many famous artists were part of the association which grew even bigger in 1890, when Maurice Boutet de Monvel joined, amongst others. The project presented here was executed by him in 1898 for the 19th exhibition. See lot 188 for a preparatory drawing.
